癔病（hysteria）又被称为“歇斯底里”，指因为恐惧或其他原因造成的情绪失控。古代西方医生认为，只有女性才会出现“歇斯底里”的症状，原因在于女性子宫功能失调；男性因为没有子宫，所以不会得癔病。他们还认为，癔病之所以有各种不同表现，是由于子宫在体内偏离正常位置，到处乱跑造成的。当子宫在体内四处游走，压迫其他器官时，会导致不由自主的恐惧。这种错误的认识，直到十九世纪才被精神学家夏尔科、弗洛伊德等人纠正。
